Five Acres is a small café tucked into the heart of St Andrews' Market Street, offering a calm and inviting spot for anyone after a fresh, vegetable-forward meal. The kitchen’s connection to its own garden is clear—not just in the menu but in the atmosphere, where the focus on local, seasonal produce feels tangible. It’s the kind of place that attracts students, locals, and families looking for wholesome lunch or a relaxed coffee break.

The food here leans heavily into fresh vegetarian options, featuring thoughtful combinations like blanched asparagus and tenderstem broccoli alongside more robust comforts such as harissa roasted potatoes with garlic aioli or a rich cauliflower cheese toastie. Plates change regularly with the seasons, reflecting what’s currently flourishing in the garden and what feels right for the weather—a marrow and butter bean stew suits a damp autumn day perfectly.

The café itself carries a homey vibe, with handmade pottery lending a personal touch to each meal and a small corner dedicated to farm-themed toys and books, showing a clear awareness of families stopping by. The care put into sourcing and preparing ingredients resonates through the dishes and the service, which feels personal without being fussy.

Visiting Five Acres mid-morning or lunchtime feels best, when the café hums quietly but steadily with conversation—a mix of students grabbing a nourishing bite, couples enjoying slow coffee, and locals popping in to pick up fresh vegetables from the attached kitchen garden stall. It’s not a noisy or crowded spot but rather one of those cafés where you can linger over a book or catch up with a friend while soaking in the neighborhood's slower pace.

In summary, Five Acres works well for anyone seeking simple, carefully prepared food that respects the seasons and the surroundings. It’s particularly appealing if you appreciate vegetarian fare made from scratch and value the connection between garden and plate within a relaxed, community-minded setting.

Fresh vegetarian food made on premises from produce grown in owners kitchen garden. Cauliflower cheese toastie was fab. Marrow and butter bean stew was great for a damp autumn day. You can buy some of the home grown veg too.

Fresh and healthy lunch. Great toastie on artisan bread with local cheddar served with a tasty salad. Would come here all the time if I was a St Andrew’s student

you will not find a lovelier spot!! every detail is perfect, from the handmade pottery to the box of kids toys and books (which by the way are mostly farm associated), not to mention it’s by FAR the best coffee and lunch in town. the food is fresh, delicious, well balanced plates that change weekly- meaning I could eat every single meal here for the rest of my life and never want for anything. The cakes and pastries are seasonal and delicious too, and perfectly complement a cup of coffee after your meal. They have options for every dietary restriction under the sun, but nothing tastes like it’s missing ingredients. In fact, I would go as far as to say the opposite- Bryde & Nat in the kitchen seems to have discovered the most delicious vegetables known to man and are creating unbelievably luxurious healthy lunches everyday. I don’t know how they do it! I can’t wait to go back, i’m already counting the days… If you find yourself in Scotland, I recommend you make the trip to St Andrews for Five Acres alone!

Fantastic farm fresh, delicious food! My family and I enjoyed their delicious mushroom cheese tart, an amazing chickpea stew with types of flavor I found astonishing, delicious, fresh mozzarella sandwich on focaccia with grilled vegetables, three different kinds of salads filled with wonderful produce, including gooseberries! They use only the freshest produce and the best ingredients. This is farm to table at its best. I cannot say enough about Five Acres! It was the best and healthiest food I’ve had since arriving in Scotland. Absolutely wonderful!

Hey you! You there! Are you a WAG and your SO was like 'I want to go to Scotland to go golfing' and you were like 'oooh I'll come Scotland looks beautiful' and now you've found yourself wandering around St Andrews? Maybe you've just bought a book for yourself from Toppings and you need lunch (bc he's still on the course). Literally look no further. Five Acres is a little slice of heaven in an already heavenly place. This is farm ! fresh ! food ! Perfectly seasoned with fresh herbs. So vegetable focused. All of the menu items pair perfectly together so you can easily mix and match. Yummy coffee and treats to boot. You go once and you'll find yourself coming again. Don't skip this! (My personal fave menu item is the burnt miso cake–don't skip it if its in stock)!
